My volunteer work in BenQ Hospital
I did volunteer work in BenQ Hospital in 21st, 22nd, 23rd January 2009 for 12 hours totally. It was not a very long time but I got much experience there.
I have sent an application form to be a volunteer of hospital to BenQ Hospital in September 2008, but the hospital did not reply to me or call me at all. In 19th January 2009, my mother advised me to make a phone call to hospital to ask about my volunteer work. I followed her instruction and the hospital ordered me to go there and plan my work. Mum was right, waiting is not a good way to strive for a job, be initiative is much better.
I started my formal volunteer work on 21st January 2009. I met some mates that day, but none of them is as young as me. They are mostly middle-aged people and someone who have retired at home. They treated as an adult not a student. For example, they called me “Xiao Wang”, no body call me Connie or my personal name.
Chinese New Year was coming, there were more less people went to hospital than the common time, and most patients have left and prepare for the new year. So, the other volunteers and I were not too busy that three days. My major job was to help people find their right ways and greet them in the lobby, helping elderly and disabled people also were two great parts of my duty. I realized the importance of be initiative during my work. When people come into the hospital, a few of them asked our volunteers the ways or what they need for help. I never ask people if they need some help at the on the first day of my work, I was just standing there and wait for anyone who need my support. I felt so bored on 21st because almost nobody come to me and ask for help, I stood here for 4 hours. It was just like military training! However, I changed my style on the next day, I asked everyone that came in the hospital gate. I spoke “What could I do for you?” to everybody. To my surprise, over 60% people needed my help! I began to know that actually most people need help, but they do not I can help them or they are not used to get help from volunteers. So, be initiative becomes very useful for volunteers, trying to speak to someone can help me help much more people.
Of course, not everyone was willing to volunteers. When I asked some people if they need help, they appeared that they had never heard my words and I am only the air. Even a few people spoke to me very impolitely. However, I felt happier than the first day because I can have something meaningful to do! I am not as bored as the beginning.
I helped a very old poor woman on the last day of my volunteer work ( 23rd January) with another volunteer. She was more than 80 years old, her right eye was cataract and her left almost could not see. She was too old to walk formally. The old woman need to the hemodialysis but none of her family members help her to the hospital! Only an old kind neighbor of hers sent her to the BenQ Hospital. The other volunteer and I supported her two arms and helped her walk very slowly to the therapeutic community. I felt sad about that old poor patient that morning.
In conclusion, I met a lot of different kinds of people and try to learn to get along with mates in BenQ Hospital. I experienced myself a lot here. I love my volunteer work and I will keep it on after the Spring Festival.
